Where did you watch this year's historic eclipse?! While a few members of the team braved the crazed crowds that were camping out in the path of totality down in Oregon, the rest of the team enjoyed viewing a 90% eclipse from the comfort of the SSW Architects office. Anticipation mounted around the 10:00 hour as the sunlight bathing the city began to dim ever so slightly. We subsequently gathered at the southeast corner of the office to witness the eclipse through the sharing of viewing glasses and home-made pinhole projectors.  ...Ah, the wonders of science.

Laying the Groundwork

The Samuelson Building Renovation and Expansion is coming to life! Central Washington University and the winning bidder, Lydig Construction, celebrated the commencement of construction in June 2016. Several months were scheduled for the demolition of the existing 57,750 SF south wing of the building and the renovation of the 49,250 SF north wing. As of December 2016, steel is being placed for the new 140,000 SF addition. 

Samuelson is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018 and will serve as a vital technology resource on the Ellensburg campus. The building will host several computer labs, informal peer-to-peer break-out spaces, faculty offices, and learning spaces. SSW continues to work hard to deliver a significant and highly anticipated project to the Wildcats. Stay tuned for updates!

SMA in the news:

• Pacific Maritime Magazine spotlighted the importance of maritime training in the Puget Sound region and the opportunities the new SMA facility will provide to the maritime industry.

• The green roof, a sustainable feature of the building, was highlighted in an article by LiveRoof.
• The christening and unveiling made headlines in The Seattle Times.

Seattle Maritime Academy, a maritime education and training program of Seattle Central College, recently dedicated a new facility designed by Schreiber Starling Whitehead Architects at its campus in Ballard. Members of the SSW Architects team were on hand for the dedication, where Seattle Central College president, Dr. Sheila Edwards, christened the building in maritime tradition by smashing a bottle of champagne on a column at the entry to the building. 

Among the features provided to train current and future mariners is a state-of-the-art simulation room, complete with 180 degrees of screens to simulate a ship's piloting deck. Though the simulator itself is stationary, the navigation conditions it creates are realistic enough to warrant a word of warning:  those with motion sickness issues should steer clear of this room!

Next stop, Rio

Schreiber Starling Whitehead Architects has put together a team for this year's A/E Summer Volleyball League – a recreational league of architecture, engineering and construction professionals in the Seattle area. After a somewhat slow start in early season matches, the SSW Architects team played their third match of the season at the end of last week and seems to be settling into a groove.

Though the scores were close all night and excellent volleys kept things lively, SSW came out on top, winning 4 of 5 games. This week Anne and Keith brought their A-game: Anne dominated at the net and Keith was connecting all over the court like a member of the US Men's National Team.

Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects is pleased to announce that as of June 2016, our firm name has changed to Schreiber Starling Whitehead Architects. Additionally, while still located in vibrant downtown Seattle, our offices have moved to 901 5th Avenue.

While our name and location have changed, and our website has a new look, there has been no change in management or our fundamental approach to design. For over twenty-five years, we remain committed to improving the built environment of our community by creating architecture that reflects our client’s vision, respects the fabric of place, and celebrates the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
