This project replaced a small single-bay station that, because of site size and historic character, was unfeasible to expand. The new Fire Station 38 is located on a recovered brownfield site, eight blocks east of the existing station. Apparatus support and station office functions are located in a single-story volume directly adjacent to the apparatus bays. A two-story component houses the kitchen, day room, and training room functions on the second floor with office and bunking rooms on the ground floor. Site development included fire apparatus aprons (front and drive-through rear aprons), a delivery and receiving area, parking area, pedestrian access walkways, and associated landscaping.
Sustainability was a prime driver of the design, with Station 38 being awarded LEED Gold certification. In addition to recovering a brownfield site, the project incorporated many sustainable features, including efficient space conditioning systems, a highly efficient building envelope, non-irrigated drought-tolerant landscaping, and an on-site rain garden.
Fire Station 38 was one of only four new fire stations in the nation selected to receive a 2011 Honor Award by F.I.E.R.O., the Fire Industry Equipment Research Organization.
